Bio:
Mia Hill is an artist that works in mediums of clay, paint, and mixed media. With clay as her main medium, she works both with functional and sculptural forms. Having a background in painting throughout most of her college career allows her to play with color and mark making in her forms. Hill finds inspiration in the world of the 2D, focusing on collage, pattern, and repetition. Other 3D inspirations are through fabric, botanicals, and the human figure. Hill includes a variety of elements throughout her work, with varying color, texture, and overall form. In both ceramics and painting she uses a wide range of colors: bold, light, and dark, in hopes of creating high contrast pieces. Hill is also interested in content with themes of duality and feminism in both ceramics and painting. 听
Hill first started her art career at San Joaquin Delta college, in the town she was raised in Stockton, CA. She had humble beginnings taking her first art class at this college as a biology major. After switching majors to business, and then finally to studio art, she decided to start her journey as an artist. Hill eventually transferred to Sacramento State University to better skills in both painting and ceramics. At the end of her time at Sacramento State, Hill focused on clay as her main medium instead. In Spring 2024, Hill graduated from Sacramento State with a BFA in Studio Art with concentrations in ceramics and painting. In the future, Hill hopes to attend residencies and eventually get an MFA in ceramics as a goal to eventually teach.听
Artist Statement:
The meaning of my art is to reflect on experiences relating to society, while being vulnerable yet informative. Topics of gender, societal standards, the psyche, and the physical body, all play integral parts within the content of the work. Imagery and elements in the work are created to stimulate a sense of uncomfortable familiarity. The point is to capture a scene, experience, or feeling through expressive means. Facets show the depth and layers of emotions with the placement of textures and the contrast of colors. The movement of elements emulates an experience that is alive and breathing. Through representation, the goal is to initially grab the attention of the viewer and pull them into the work. My work can represent empowerment and liberation. Though, underneath the surface a depth is revealed, that is riddled with anxiety, shame, trauma, and disappointment. Overall, the work is meant to evoke feelings of relatability to the viewer or give a different perspective to feel what is alive in my reality.

I Couldn鈥檛 Save You is a sculpture and a poem I made in times of reminded trauma. Words can carry an immense amount of pain, and others may not recognize how much they can weigh. I made this piece and pieces of words in response to someone else's words said to me. Those words brought me back to a time in my life where I did not have time to heal my trauma. These hands are holding what has broken. I鈥檝e held onto these memories for some time now and held them heavy with grief.听
