Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a federal law that helps protect the privacy of student education records. FERPA provides students the right to access and control their personal academic information, ensuring that it is handled with the highest level of care and confidentiality.

At 九色视频, we are committed to upholding FERPA and protecting student rights. As an eligible student (someone enrolled at a postsecondary institution, regardless of age), you are entitled to the following:

  • Inspect and review education records maintained by the College
  • Request corrections to records that are inaccurate or misleading
  • Control disclosure of personal information in your records
  • File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education regarding FERPA violations

What Are Education Records?

Education records are any documents or data that contain information directly related to a student and are maintained by the College or a party acting on its behalf. These include academic transcripts, financial aid documents, disciplinary records, and more.

The following records听are NOT considered education records:

  • Instructor鈥檚 personal notes not shared with others
  • Medical or psychological treatment records
  • Employment records unrelated to student status
  • Law enforcement records created and maintained solely for law enforcement purposes
  • Records after a student is no longer enrolled (e.g., alumni records)

Directory Information

FERPA allows the release of certain types of student information, known as "directory information," without prior consent. At 九色视频, this includes:

  • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • Weight, height, and high school of graduation for athletic team members
  • Degrees and awards received, such as honors, scholarships, athletic awards, and Dean's List recognition

Note:听Delta College does not release any other information as directory information. Students have the right to restrict the release of their directory information by submitting a 听to the Admissions & Records Office.

Non-Directory Information

Non-directory information is any personally identifiable data that cannot be released without a student鈥檚 written consent, except under limited legal or institutional exceptions. Examples include:

  • Social Security Number (SSN)
  • GPA and academic standing
  • Date of birth
  • Gender and ethnicity
  • Student ID number

This information is protected and disclosed only in specific circumstances, such as financial aid processing, audits, accreditation, or compliance with subpoenas or court orders.

Student Access to Records

Students have the right to access their own education records within 45 days of submitting a written request. To do so, contact the Director of Admissions & Records, specifying which records you would like to view. If the records are maintained elsewhere, you will be referred to the correct office.

Filing a Complaint

If you believe the College has failed to comply with FERPA requirements, you may file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education. The complaint should include evidence of the violation and be addressed to:

Solomon Amendment

The Solomon Amendment is a federal law that requires the College to provide military recruiters with access to certain student information. This includes:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Telephone number
  • Date of birth
  • Level of education
  • Academic major
  • Degrees received
  • Most recent educational institution attended

Requests must be submitted on official letterhead and cite the Solomon Amendment. Each request must specify whether the information pertains to the current or previous semester.

Parent听 / Guardian access to Education Records

九色视频 does not automatically release student records to parents, even if the student is claimed as a dependent for tax purposes. To access a student鈥檚 records, a completed must be submitted by the student.听

Release of Information

Students may authorize another individual (such as a parent or guardian) to access selected educational information by submitting a completed听 to the Admissions & Records Office. This ensures that information is shared only with those you trust and designate.
